I had just gotten my cardio in at the gym when I decided to do some strength training with free weights. As I walked towards the weights area, there were a bunch of guys with giant weights working out. Then I noticed this guy with small looking weights compared to the rest. I can’t even lie, I totally judged him. Lol I joked in my head “Can you see what your mates are carrying??” lmao. I know, so wrong but it was funny. 😀
I walked towards the racks of weights and reached for what I figured I could lift. Apparently, I was somewhat delusional. All of a sudden I had respect for the guy with the “small weights”. I moved over to the next rack with much smaller weights. I started from the biggest but it was too heavy. I kept going down until I was at the second smallest one -30lbs. I was so embarrassed but I thought “Moren respect yourself!” lol
I picked it up and did 3 sets of 4 exercises. As I worked out, I slowly felt my arms transform to jelly. Between exercises I would do little dances as I tried to rest. It didn’t matter what anyone else was doing, just that my muscles were getting challenged and my workout was effective. By my 3rd set it got too funny, I still looked like I was lifting lollypops compared to the rest of the guys, but I was struggling to complete my reps and my facial expressions made it too clear. Lol. But when I was done, I felt amazing. I had the healthy ache going and I knew I had put in some good work
Some people don’t work out because of what other people think, they are not sure how to use the equipment in the gym so they just rather not go, or they feel their body jiggles when they run so they won’t run outside even if they wanted to. Your journey is personal and it’s ok to act like you are in your own world. The beauty of your journey is that if you keep it up, you will get better, leaner, stronger… So you don’t have to remain where you are today but you do have to start somewhere. So Gymtimidation? Aint NOBODY got time for that! Start where you are then get better. Let’s do this!
You go girl!! Those muscle fibers are lovin’ you right now!! Keep up the good health work!
Thanks Dawn! I appreciate you stopping by:)
I have such gymintimidate that I don’t go! I prefer to work out in my home. I did attend a gym once but choose an old person gym for fear of judgement. Silly I know
Hey Jenn, I can definitely relate so I don’t think it’s silly. Haha. I used to be scared I won’t be able to keep up in group workout classes so I didn’t go even if I thought they looked like fun. It took a while for me to try it and when I did, initially I couldn’t keep up but I had a blast. If you truly just enjoy working out at home, that’s great but if you think the gym has something to offer then go for it! It might be a struggle initially but focusing on you rather than anyone else really helps. You can do whatever you please:D thanks for stopping by Jenn, please let me know if there is anyway I can support you on your journey.
Good for you!!
Thanks Roshni:)
Great post! Stopping by from Fitness Media in Motion! 🙂
Why thank you much Julie:)
Good on you! Sounds like a great workout 🙂 I have never worked out at a gym, have only worked out from home for the last 16 years. Gymphobia lol
No way! That is awesome… I mean 16 years without the gym. Hey if it works for you, don’t change it but if you are just curious then definitely try it:D Most people in there usually are still trying to figure it out too. Haha. Thanks for stopping by Angel:)
Way to go not being intimidated by the other weight lifters, the most important part of lifting is that you are doing it right
So true Samantha! Thanks for your encouragement 🙂
I can definitely relate. I will rarely go to the weight side of the gym because it’s nothing but guys there and they are always staring at me which makes me intimidated and very uncomfortable.
