“Awww Jibs is turning one! What are you doing to celebrate?” I had heard this only a million times in the last couple months and the answer was simple… “Nothing, absolutely nothing” I mean, it was his 1st birthday. He wouldn’t even know what was going on. Maybe I would take him to a “mummy and me” class, or maybe I would have his cousins over for some cake but nothing more than that.
Before I knew it, it was 2 weeks to his birthday and I was out of town for work. At like 4am that morning in my hotel room, I woke up totally freaking out and thought “Crap! We really need to do something for his birthday” lol. Talked to hubby and we decided on something small for family.
Since it was so last minute, I spent lots of late nights working on the decor. Felt like such a Mum painting boxes and cutting out music note cookies but it all came together and little man had a blast!
Towards the end of the evening, As a piece of red velvet cake was about to land in my mouth, one of our guests walked up to me and asked “How are you able to eat all this crap and still stay fit?!” It was perfect timing. Haha. We had a conversation about it and here are a few tips I shared on how to have a good time while being fitness conscious
• Be mentally aware when you are going in: Think about the party/event from early on in the day. Don’t stress about it. Just simply think through some questions like “What type of food might they have”, “Should I be conservative at breakfast and lunch so I’m not too stuffed for dinner?” then plan accordingly.
• Be physically aware: Whether you are eating at home, grabbing a pizza or eating a fancy dinner, your stomach size does not change. Pay attention to when you are full and learn to be comfortable stopping at that point. You can’t eat it now for tomorrow so don’t think “If I don’t have it now, I’ll regret it later”
• Briefly consider the caloric content: Don’t be the party pooper talking about “Dangggg, do you know how many calories is in that?!?!” But consider it privately. Remember that taking some is an option. So if it’s a high calorie item you can consider having a smaller portion of it.
• Enjoy every bite: If it’s good, the first few bites are just heaven. Pay attention to when you are eating just because it’s on your plate. At that point put the plate down and walk away. If it’s not even that great or worth it, ditch it. I hate wasting food but eating it is just as wasteful because you just make your body the trash can instead. The better alternative is to manage your servings before you start eating so none or not as much goes to waste.
• Finally Keep calm and have a good time: Don’t let thinking about fitness get in the way of having a good time. If you make little good decisions throughout the day, it sums up to a largely successful day. It’s the holidays be sure to enjoy it!
From mines to yours! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!
