Ok my first thought as I started looking into this was why are they called fats? It just sounds like something to avoid completely but it turns out some fats are actually good.
Good fats: Mono-unsaturated, Poly-unsaturated
Bad fats: Saturated and Trans fats.
The names were not as important to me as learning to recognize them were. See, good fats tend to stay in liquid form at room temperature, lower cholesterol and the risk of heart diseases. Bad fats on the other hand are solid at room temperature, increase cholesterol and the risk of heart diseases.
Then I started reading on trans fats and it was like fire alarms went off in my head. Apparently trans fats are a man-made fat that help to prevent food from going bad. It is fantastic for food manufacturers but adds nothing positive to the body. Like my body would live all the days of its life without trans-fat and not notice… But regrets every bit it gets. So the healthy advice was to reduce saturated fats, eliminate trans fats and eat good fats.
Sounded easy until I read the good fats/bad fats list and guess what? Everything I “could” indulge in was on the bad list…especially the trans-fat list! That was a tough pill to swallow. I figured I will take it one day at a time and use the knowledge I attained to make better choices with no pressure! So don’t judge me when I have a piece of cake, what is important is I am aware and paying attention to how much/little I eat. It also seems like the more you cook/bake yourself the better you are at having tasty foods with better nutritional value. Nothing helps me watch what I eat better than My Fitness Pal app, so I continue to recommend it. If you still don’t have it, download it now!
Great stuff Moren!! Can’t wait for more! Good luck and all the best!
